A Note from our President –
This is the week we move into high gear!  Thanksgiving is just days away, and after that the countdown to Christmas and Hanukkah is underway.
So, my gift to you is this advice:  Let go of just a little this year, and take more time for you!  Join us at all, or some of the wonderful activities we’ve planned—they’re guaranteed to relieve a little stress, put you in the holiday spirit and help you touch base with busy old and new friends.
The Minneapolis Grain Exchange is about to go high tech. See a bit of history on the Wanderers tour. Enjoy some holiday treats at our Coffee at Betty’s home near Lake Calhoun.
We’ll delight in a Taste of Many Cultures on International Night. Let Kozy’s do the cooking on Ladies Night Out.  And of course of annual Holiday Luncheon is not to be missed!
See you there!

WANDERERS––Wednesday, December 3rd, 9:00AM Departure—Minneapolis Grain Exchange Tour, 400 South 4th St., Minneapolis   612-827-4746
The economy of the Upper Midwest was built on the production of wheat, and other grain.  The Mpls. Grain Exchange (MGEX) began in 1881 to  develop a centralized marketplace to make supplies more reliable and establish fair prices.  The building built in 1907 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The MGEX currently employs an auction method called “open outcry”.  Traders stand in a pit, and bids and offers are shouted or communicated through hand signals.  However, this time-honored system will go electronic on December 19th, turning to on-line auctions and making the trading pit obsolete.
Free tours last about 90 minutes, and include history of the exchange and a visit to the trading floor.  We’ll will learn a little about future and options trading which can help both buyers and sellers plan ahead.   Meet us at the exchange before the 10:15AM tour or join the carpool which will leave Edina at 9:00AM.  We’ll plan to take the light rail in to Minneapolis City Hall stop,  just across the street from the exchange.  RSVP by Tuesday, December 2nd to Sally@EdinaNewcomers.org  Please indicate if you plan to carpool.

WANDERERS––Thursday, November 6th, 10:30 Departure—Visit to New Minneapolis Hotels

Recently, a number of new hotels have been developed in downtown Minneapolis. Let’s do an informal visit to a few of them, perhaps have lunch at one, and choose our favorites. The 1929 Foshay Tower was the tallest building in Minneapolis until the IDS building was built. The W Hotel is a wonderful renovation in the art deco style and has an observation tower. The Hotel Ivy, the city’s first 5-star hotel and luxury spa, is also a rebirth of a 1930’s building originally designed as part of a Christian Science complex. The Chambers Hotel is known for its original art. We’ll park at a central location, or take the light rail and walk from there. Please wear comfortable shoes. A carpool will leave at 10:30AM from Sally’s home at 4501 Claremore Ct. RSVP by Wednesday, November 5th to Barbara Nazarian at brnazarian@comcast.net or 952-943-8851

Note later start time! I am out in this light industry complex to get a replacement part for my sander and what do I spy but a little sign that leads me to this working person’s luncheonette! Had a nice chat with owner— he is very enthusiastic about the food he serves. They do hot and cold sandwiches, homemade soup, chili and salads plus daily specials. The place is not fancy, but neat and clean, the menu looks good, and very reasonable in price. Because they have limited space I made our reservation for 1:00PM so we do not interfere with their “regulars. Please join us for food and conversation.
