BOOKCLUB READING AHEAD:

September 2012: Cutting for Stone : a novel / Abraham Verghese

Marion, fresh out of medical school, flees Ethiopia and makes his way to America, finding refuge in his work as an intern at an underfunded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to him, nearly destroying him, Marion must entrust his life to the two men he thought he trusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandoned him and the brother who betrayed him.  Over 500 pages—get started early. Mostly large type copies available at HCLib.org.

November 2012: Tinkers / Paul Harding

Pulitzer Prize American Library Association Notable Book PEN / Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers Award.  An old man lies dying. Propped up in his living room and surrounded by his children and grandchildren, George Washington Crosby drifts in and out of consciousness, back to the wonder and pain of his impoverished childhood in Maine. As the clock repairer’s time winds down, his memories intertwine with those of his father, an epileptic, itinerant peddler and his grandfather, a Methodist preacher beset by madness. At once heartbreaking and life affirming, Tinkers is an elegiac meditation on love, loss, illness, faith, and the fierce beauty of nature. No waiting 191 pages

January 2013: Self-Made Man : one woman’s journey into manhood and back again / Norah Vincent

For more than a year and a half Vincent ventured into the world as Ned, with an ever-present five o’clock shadow and a crew cut–a perfect disguise that enabled her to observe the world of men as an insider. With her buddies on the bowling league she enjoyed the rough and rewarding embrace of male camaraderie; a stint in a high-octane sales job taught her the gut-wrenching pressures endured by men who would do anything to succeed; she frequented sex clubs, dated women hungry for love but bitter about men, and infiltrated all-male communities including a men’s therapy group and even a monastery. She ended her journey astounded — and exhausted — by the rigid codes and rituals of masculinity.

March 2013: Shanghai Girls : a novel / Lisa See.

In the mid 1930′s two well-educated sisters from Shanghai go to Los Angeles to become brides of the “Gold Mountain men” when their family is on the verge of bankruptcy. When they get there they are detained, interrogated, and humiliated for months. When one of the sisters becomes pregnant they vow that no one will ever know.

May 2013: Stealing Secrets by H. Donald Winkler

Clandestine missions. Clever, devious, daring. Passionately committed to a cause. During America’s most divisive war, both the Union and Confederacy took advantage of brave and courageous women willing to adventurously support their causes. These female spies of the Civil War participated in the world’s second-oldest profession-spying-a profession perilous in the extreme. The tales of female spies are filled with suspense, bravery, treachery, and trickery. They took enormous risks and achieved remarkable results-often in ways men could not do. As stated on the grave marker of Union spy Elizabeth Van Lew: “She risked everything that is dear to man-friends, fortune, comfort, health, life itself.” Told with personality and pizzazz, the author uses memoirs, journals, letters, and newspaper articles, plus the latest in scholarly research.
