WANDERERS––Wednesday, December 3rd, 9:00AM Departure—Minneapolis Grain Exchange Tour, 400 South 4th St., Minneapolis 612-827-4746
The economy of the Upper Midwest was built on the production of wheat, and other grain. The Mpls. Grain Exchange (MGEX) began in 1881 to develop a centralized marketplace to make supplies more reliable and establish fair prices. The building built in 1907 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The MGEX currently employs an auction method called “open outcry”. Traders stand in a pit, and bids and offers are shouted or communicated through hand signals. However, this time-honored system will go electronic on December 19th, turning to on-line auctions and making the trading pit obsolete.
Free tours last about 90 minutes, and include history of the exchange and a visit to the trading floor. We’ll will learn a little about future and options trading which can help both buyers and sellers plan ahead. Meet us at the exchange before the 10:15AM tour or join the carpool which will leave Edina at 9:00AM.
