September 2008 ACTIVITIES

A Note from our President –

Another summer is flying by! This one’s going especially fast, with our son preparing to head off to ASU next week—and into Arizona’s 100+ degree weather!

September will bring a welcome break from the heat. That’s the beauty of Minnesota––there’s always another season to look forward to. We’re looking forward to three seasons of wonderful Edina Newcomers activities, too. So, come along for the fun!

We’ll check out the Midtown Global Market at this month’s Coffee. I did a summer internship in Minneapolis. City Hall 36 years ago! Join the Wanderers’ tour to learn more about its history.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to the 50’s at the Convention Grill on Ladies Night Out.. Savor some real BBQ at our Luncheon at Rudolph’s. There’s still time for some summer reading. Pick up Kabul Beauty School and join us for the discussion at Lina’s. I’ve driven past Suzette’s many times. I’ll finally get a chance to try it on International Night!

See you there!         Sally   Sally@Edinanewcomers.org

Expect an authentic burger joint experience, with burgers so juicy they almost fall apart, salty skin-on fries and creamy malts. One of the great joys of the Convention Grill: watching the waitress expertly tap out your malt, thick as lava, into a fluted glass, then setting down the can as if to say, “Try that at home, mister.” RSVP by Saturday, September 13th, to Brenda@Edinanewcomers.org

Kabul Beauty School: An American woman goes behind the veil by Deborah Rodriguez has given millions of readers a window on the lives of women in Afghanistan. It’s the rollicking story of one of the strangest foreign-aid projects ever conceived, the creation of an academy to train Afghan beauticians.” The HCLib.org waiting list is very short—reserve your copy now.

INTERNATIONAL NIGHT: Tuesday, September 30th, 5:30 Departure—Dinner at Suzette’s
Jordan, MN 952-492-2422

Seven years after critics said he’d never make it, Banrith Yong, a Cambodian refugee, 5-star chef, and owner of this French and Italian restaurant is still preparing each exquisite meal himself.
It’s a bit of a drive to this small, simple building, but Yong’s creations, prepared with care and beauty, are well worth it! He frequently leaves the kitchen to visit with guests—and perhaps will share with us the harrowing story of his escape from the Khmer Rouge “Killing Fields”. A car pool will leave Edina at 5:30PM. RSVP by Friday, September 26th to Sally@Edinanewcomers.org. Please indicate if you plan to carpool.

Alice’s Tulips, by Sandra Dallas, is written in the form of letters from Alice, a young bride living with her mother-in-law on an Iowa farm while her new husband is off fighting in the Civil War, to her sister. The book offers insights into rural life at the time, a short history of quilting, and, for good measure, a murder is tossed into the mix. Copies are readily available at the library.
