December 2007 ACTIVITIES
A Note from our President –
This is the week we move into high gear! Thanksgiving is just days away, and after that the countdown to Christmas and Hanukah is underway.
So, my gift to you is this advice: Let go of just a little this year, and take more time for you! Join us at all, or some of the wonderful activities we’ve planned—they’re guaranteed to relieve a little stress, put you in the holiday spirit and help you touch base with busy old and new friends.
We’ll get in the holiday spirit right away with a Wanderers tour of the always popular Swedish Institute. I just saw Love in the Time of Cholera—and loved it! Don’t miss it on International Night.. If you’re looking for an answer to “What’s for dinner?”, Sociale may be what you’re looking for. Try it out at this month’s Coffee. Take a break from all the heavy holiday food with a light seafood dinner at Three Fish on Ladies Night Out. And of course our annual Holiday Luncheon is not to be missed!
See you there! Sally Sally@EdinaNewcomers.org
ACTIVITIES
WANDERERS––Wednesday, December 5th, 12:30 Departure––American Swedish Institute
2600 Park Avenue, Minneapolis
The American Swedish Institute was founded in 1929 to preserve Swedish culture in the Twin Cities. Housed in the 1908 Turnblad Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Institute is presenting its annual “A Nordic Christmas”. Christmas trees and table settings representing Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Finland decorate the mansion. Many rooms feature intricate wood carving and unique Swedish porcelain stoves. There’s also a permanent exhibit depicting Swedish immigration to the Twin Cities. We’ll follow a self-guided tour. During the holidays, the Institute’s fabulous gift shop stocks many Christmas decorations imported from Scandinavia. Admission is $6 or free with a Museum Adventure Pass available through local libraries. Meet us at the museum or car pool from Edina. Carpools will leave at 12:30pm. We plan to be at the museum by 1:00PM. Please RSVP by December 4th to Sally@EdinaNewcomers.org

BOOKCLUB––January Discussion Date TBA––A Thousand Splendid Suns
“As good as Khaled Hosseini’s Kite Runner was, A Thousand Splendid Suns may be better.
The history of Afghanistan is marked by death and loss and unimaginable grief. And, yet, people find a way to survive, to go on. This breathtaking story, set against the volatile events of Afghanistan’s last thirty years, is the tale of two generations of characters brought together by the war, where personal lives are inextricable from the history playing out around them. It is a story of the unconquerable spirit of a people and individuals seen through the eyes of two indomitable women.” READING AHEAD FOR MARCH: Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen. Used copies are $9 on Amazon.com, or get on the HClibrary.org list ASAP—the shortest wait is for large print. We’re still in need of a book and hostess for May, and a summer book to discuss in September.
